Bus Users UK gets first-hand experience of what it takes to be a bus driver

Two members of the team at Bus Users UK found out for themselves what it’s like to drive a bus today when they got behind the wheel for a VIP driving experience thanks to Go North East.

Dawn Badminton-Capps, Bus Users Director for England and Programme Manager Victoria Walker gave the brand new electric vehicles a run for their money at Go North East’s Gateshead Riverside Depot. The day was part of a drive to encourage more people, particularly women to become bus drivers.

The ‘crash’ course included a width test, cycle awareness, ramp use, reverse parallel parking and vehicle charging. According to Victoria the experience was a real eye opener: “The training was brief but thorough and gave us a real insight into the level of responsibility a bus driver has when it comes to road and passenger safety. It was also great fun and something I would highly recommend!”

Ben Maxfield, Business Director for Go North East said: “We’re passionate about attracting new audiences to bus driving and our ‘You are not a bus driver’ campaign is specifically aimed at talking direct to people who have never previously considered it as a potential career move.

“We want to highlight what a dynamic role it is, and how key our drivers are in keeping our communities moving. We know there’s lots of people out there who would share in that passion and make amazing bus drivers, and we were delighted when Dawn and Victoria agreed to take part in our bus driving experience to help spread the word.

“And seeing their skills behind the wheel… if they’re ever thinking about a career move we would welcome them with open arms!”
