Bus Users UK welcomes £1 fare cap extension for young people in Wales

Welsh Government has announced an extension to the £1 fare cap for young people until March 2027.

Over 9 million journeys have been made since the start of the scheme and over 38,000 mytravelpass cards have been issued to 16-21 year olds.

The scheme was introduced in September 2025 for 16 to 21-year-olds and was extended to 5 to 15-year-olds in November 2025.

Welcoming the news, Lydia Horbury, Chief Executive of Bus Users UK said:

Affordable bus travel is about so much more than the price of a ticket – it’s about opportunity.

It affects whether a young person can say yes to college, an apprenticeship, a first job, a night out with friends, a day exploring somewhere new or simply having the freedom to get out and about without worrying about the cost.

For young people, affordable, accessible bus travel can open doors. It widens horizons, builds independence and makes opportunities feel genuinely within reach.

So if we want the next generation to see the bus as part of everyday life, making it affordable is a pretty good place to start.
