A ‘reinvigorated’ operator’s association for the North East of England has been launched.
NEbus, supported by Bus Users, aims to improve passenger journeys, support local communities, reduce congestion and improve air quality.
The North East has a high bus-using population, with Tyne and Wear the fourth largest in England outside of London. Bus passenger satisfaction levels are above 90% and operators in the area are a major employer, with over 6,000 members of staff locally.
NEbus brings together key stakeholders from across the region to encourage even more people to use the bus. The group will focus on celebrating successes, and ensuring buses are recognised for the value they bring to people’s lives, to local communities and to society as a whole.
NEbus Chair, Martijn Gilbert, said: “Delivering high quality, sustainable public transport is a shared responsibility between operators, local authorities and central government. No one party has all the solutions, so if buses are to truly fulfil their potential, they need greater support from stakeholders.
“We are calling on partners across the region to embrace a more positive message about buses and to work with us to deliver further improvements.”
Speaking at the launch, Dawn Badminton-Capps, Bus Users Director for England, said: “NEbus is a great opportunity for the bus industry to work collaboratively with its stakeholders. As an organisation representing passengers, we are delighted to be involved and welcome the chance to help improve transport in the North East.”
