Improving access to transport for guide dog users and people with sight loss in Scotland

Bus Users and Guide Dogs Scotland have brought together Scotland’s leading bus operators to look at improving access to transport for people with sight loss.

During their first meeting, two passengers with sight loss shared some of the challenges of travelling by bus including buses being forced to stop away from designated bus stops and the lack of on-board audio announcements.

Operators also heard about the impact of Covid including social distancing and stickers on floors and seats which, for someone with sight loss, are not detectable.

Some of the actions to come out of the meeting are staff training, sharing apps with disability groups to get feedback, technology development, and awareness raising among other passengers. A wider accessibility panel is also planned which will incorporate other disability organisations and passengers.
