Bus Users UK Guide: Setting up a Local Group

Background

Passenger groups offer unique local knowledge and valuable insight into the needs and concerns of local communities.

Before setting up a new group, here are some things to consider:

  • Does a bus or transport-focused group already operate in your area?
  • How will you promote your work and engage community support?
  • Do you have enough willing volunteers for the day-to-day running of a local group?
  • Is someone prepared to act as a contact for members of the press and public?

Working with Bus Users UK

We support the activities of local groups wherever they reflect our values and mission as a charity, and where we feel we can have the greatest impact.

We promote their work on our website and through our social media channels, and we work collaboratively on local events and campaigns, including our seminal Catch the Bus Month campaign. We also provide advice on transport inclusion, accessibility and community engagement, and we pass on press enquiries and partnership opportunities wherever possible.

It’s worth getting in touch with an existing local group to find out how to set one up and how they operate – you can find details for a number of groups listed on our website.

If you become part of a local group, keep us informed about your work and developments in your area, and let us know if you’re active on social media so we can follow and support you.

About Bus Users UK

Bus Users campaigns for inclusive, accessible transport. We are the only approved Alternative Dispute Resolution Body for the bus and coach industry and the designated body for handling complaints under the Passenger Rights in Bus and Coach Legislation. We are also part of a Sustainable Transport Group of organisations working to promote the benefits of public, shared and active travel.

Alongside our complaints work we investigate and monitor services and work with operators and transport providers to improve services for everyone. We run events, carry out research, respond to consultations, speak at government select committees and take part in industry events to make sure the voice of the passenger is heard.

Bus Users UK is a registered charity (1178677 and SC049144) and a Company Limited by Guarantee (04635458).
